Sinar Mas Program Recognized as Contributing to Forest and Ground Fire Prevention

The Village (DMPA) program of palm oil company Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food has received a recognition as one that has contributed to curbing the forest and ground fires that have annually plagued Indonesia in the past decades.

The Tempo Country Contributor Award 2020 was awarded to Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food for its Desa Makmur Peduli Api (Prosperous Fire Concerned/DPMA) program, the company said in a press release on Friday (11/12.)

“Together with the other stakeholders, we continue to work together to curb forest and ground fires. Only through cooperation can we get an Indonesia that is free from forest and ground fires,” Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food Managing Director Sustainability, Agus Purnomo said referring to the program that won the award.

The panel of jury, in their selection process, recognized the contribution of this company program to the lower number of forest and ground fires in areas where the program was implemented. Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food stressed the importance of collaboration between local communities and the company in preventing forest and ground fires.

The program emphasizes three approaches – forest and ground fire prevention, conservation and food resilience that is collaborative and participative. Stakeholders all work at the grass root level to solve existing problems, not only from a technil side, but also use socio-cultural approaches in preventing the fires.

The DMPA program that has been ongoing since 2016, now covered 40 villages in the provinces of Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka, West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan. More than 1,150 people have received training in fires management and become volunteers of the Fire Preparedness Community (Masyarakat Siaga Api/MPA.)

The annual Tempo Country Contributor Award, that has been awarded since 2018, this year added a new category, awards for corporate social responsibility (CSR.)

The CSR award was given in five main sectors – the environment, health, education, economy and entrepreneurship, and Disaster. Innovation was key to get this CSR award with programs having to be able to show concrete impact on communities and on sustainability.

Sinar Mas Agribusiness and Food which operates under Golden Agri-Resources (GAR) is an oil palm plantation company with a planted area in Indonesia reaching more than 495,274 hectares (including plantations of plasma scheme farmers) by September 30, 2019.
