Riau collects data on 1.3m hectares of smallholder oil palm plantations

Bisnis Indonesia, 17 October 2018

Riau government will collect data on smallholder oil palm plantations next year as part of its five-year action plan (RAP) on sustainable palm oil program, Riau Crops, Horticulture, and Plantations Agency Plantations Division Head Vera Virginia said in Pekanbaru on Tuesday (October 16). The RAP is developed after the recently established Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil Forum (FoKSBI) appointed Riau, North Sumatra, and East Kalimantan to pilot the sustainable palm oil program, Vera said. The three provinces were deemed to have the largest oil palm plantations.

Vera said that data compiled by the agency showed Riau has 2.3 million hectares of oil palm plantations; however, only 975,000 hectares of corporate plantations and 1.3 million hectares of smallholder plantations have obtained permits.
