Longing for sustainable palm oil management

Kompas, 14 December 2018

The government has initiated several strategies to improve the performance of palm oil industry this year. The government on December 3 started to revoke export levy on oil palm, crude palm oil (CPO), and its derivatives in order to raise the price of fresh fruit bunches. The government also tried to reduce negative campaigns on palm oil from the European Union, which made the latter delay the ban on palm oil-based biodiesel from 2021 to 2030. The French government is also refusing to boycott palm oil thanks to Indonesian government’s effort, Indonesian Palm Oil Board (DMSI) Chair Derom Bangun said.

To further erase the negative campaigns on palm oil, the government must enforce the sustainable development principles on domestic palm oil industry. DMSI is encouraging plantations to obtain Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certificate and implement No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation (NDPE) principles.
