The Environment and Forestry Ministry has released 977,824 hectare (ha) of forest areas as sites for agrarian reform (TORA). Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya said that once the areas have been released, the role of regional governments and other related ministries will be needed to distribute the land to local residents. The ministry released forest areas for two purposes, namely lands for transmigration areas and for a people’s oil palm plantation programme initiated by President Joko Widodo.
