Forest and land fires in South Sumatra have burned 784.35 hectares of land in January-August 2018 period. South Sumatra Police Chief Inspector General Zulkarnain Adinegara said on Wednesday (August 22) that the police are currently handling 56 fire cases. He added that the number of cases is likely to increase this year. From those 56 cases, only seven cases have entered investigation process. Meanwhile, on a separate occasion, South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin said that the government and related stakeholders will continue to anticipate hotspots in the region.
